iPad (10th generation)
The tablet that made Europe write a law about spare parts
Cheap to buy, expensive to keep. The battery sits behind a glued screen and the charging port is soldered to the board, which is why independent raters place it near the bottom of the European tablet table.
What this costs you in year three
The purchase decision looks easy: it is the cheapest way into a large, well-supported tablet. The ownership decision is where it turns. Lithium batteries lose capacity on a schedule, and a tablet that spends its life plugged in at a desk loses it faster.
On a device with a serviceable battery, year three is a 40 euro part and half an hour. Here it is a workshop job, the screen is a consumable in that job, and the total bill lands close enough to the price of a replacement unit that a lot of owners simply replace it. That is the entire argument of this site in one example.
The screen-first problem
The battery is not buried because Apple could not reach it. It is behind the display, and the display is bonded to the frame with adhesive. The accepted procedure is to heat the panel until the adhesive softens, work picks around the perimeter, lift the glass, then remove the logic board before the battery tabs can be pulled.
Every one of those steps is a chance to crack the panel you are trying to save. Independent teardown write-ups put the battery job at hard and the screen job at advanced, which is a fair description of a repair where the most expensive component is destroyed by a mistake on the way to a cheap one.
The charging port is the other long-term failure. It is soldered to the main board, so a worn port is not a 20 euro part — it is a microsoldering job, or a dead tablet.
The law arrived before the redesign
This is the interesting part, and it is why this device matters more than its spec sheet suggests. Tablets sold in the EU have been covered by Ecodesign requirements since 2023, and those rules pushed manufacturers to make key spare parts — batteries, displays, cameras, ports — available rather than theoretical.
On top of that sits the EU Right to Repair Directive, which member states had to apply from 31 July 2026. It obliges manufacturers to repair covered products at a reasonable price, extends the legal guarantee by a year when a consumer chooses repair over replacement, and forbids contractual, hardware or software tricks that block independent repair unless there is an objective justification.
There is a real limit worth knowing: for phones and tablets the parts obligation has been written around supply to professional repairers, and the definition of a professional repairer is not harmonised across the union. So the law is a lever, not a switch. It makes a repair shop viable where it previously was not, and it puts pressure on the next generation of hardware. It does not hand you a battery kit today.
That is why the complaint about this tablet is not really about Apple's engineers. It is about a product line that was designed before the rules existed and has not been redesigned since.
Who should buy it anyway
Plenty of people should. If you want a large screen for streaming, reading and video calls, and you replace devices on a three-year cycle before the battery matters, nothing here applies to you and this is still the value pick.
It is a poor choice for the two groups this site exists for: households that keep tablets for six or seven years, and anyone who wants to hand a device down. For those, a tablet with a user-reachable battery is worth the extra money up front, because the alternative is paying for the same device twice.
Keep
- iPadOS support runs for years, so software will not be what ends this device
- The battery is held by stretch-release adhesive strips rather than a solid glue bed
- Screen assemblies and batteries are sold by iFixit and other independent suppliers
- Tablets sold in the EU already fall under Ecodesign rules requiring spare parts for years after the model is withdrawn
Costs you
- The screen has to come off before the battery, and the logic board comes out with it — a 90 to 180 minute job with heat, picks and patience
- The charging port is soldered to the main board, so the most common wear failure becomes a board-level repair
- No official parts programme covers this model: Apple's Self Service Repair store serves iPhones and Macs, not this iPad
- Independent rating places it at 36 out of 100, second-worst of 23 tablets measured for the EU market
