Framework Laptop 16

The most repairable laptop gets a graphics card you can swap

Testado por nósAtualizado 2026-108 min de leitura

iFixit scored it 10 out of 10. The 16-inch chassis takes the 13's modularity and adds a hot-swap graphics bay, six module bays and an expansion shell you can drop a GPU into without opening the machine. It is heavier, pricier and louder, but as a device designed to outlive its warranty it has no equal.

A 10 out of 10 that earns it

iFixit's snapshot is unusually clean: the display panel is held by screws and comes off without opening the laptop, the fans sit in the expansion bay, storage and memory are standard components, and almost everything fastens with a single Torx T5. Screws are labelled and grouped, and many modules carry QR codes that link directly to the replacement part.

The result is a laptop where the most common failures — battery, fan, keyboard, port — are each a ten-minute, well-documented job, and the OEM parts selection is genuinely excellent.

The graphics card that comes out

The headline difference from the 13 is the expansion bay: a housing at the back of the machine where the graphics module lives. You can swap the GPU without opening the chassis at all, which is the one upgrade that no sealed laptop allows.

For a device meant to last, that is the point. The compute platform can be replaced as discrete GPUs improve, while the screen, keyboard, battery and shell stay. Used sparingly, it is the difference between a laptop that is useful in year six and one that is landfill.

What you give up

Be clear-eyed about the trade. The 16 is heavier and more expensive than the 13, the fans are audible under load, and the magnetic keyboard's visible screws can mislead a first-time fixer into removing them. Board-level schematics remain unpublished.

If you want the most portable repairable laptop, the 13 is still the better machine. The 16 is for people who want a desktop-class, upgradeable computer that they intend to keep for the better part of a decade.

Keep

  • iFixit repairability score: 10 out of 10, class-leading
  • The graphics module lives in an expansion bay you can replace without opening the laptop
  • Every major part is sold individually, QR-coded and linked straight to the store
  • A free public service manual, captive screws and a single Torx T5 driver for almost everything

Costs you

  • Heavier and pricier than the 13, and the fans under load are audible
  • Screws on the magnetic keyboard can confuse first-time fixers into thinking they must be removed
  • Board-level schematics are still not published for independent shops
