Nothing Phone (3a)

A transparent phone whose screws you can actually see

Testado por nósAtualizado 2026-106 min de leitura

The design philosophy is honest and it helps: fewer screws than you expect, and a back panel that shows you the layout before you open it. The adhesive and a short feature-update window are what hold the score down.

Transparency that is not only cosmetic

The clear back is a marketing device, and it happens to be a useful one. When the internal layout is part of the product, the manufacturer has less room for the kind of structural decisions that make a device hostile to service — and you can see the battery, the coil and the board before you commit to opening anything.

The teardown reports back this up: the rear panel is retained by a small number of screws, and the battery underneath needs only a few more. That is a materially better starting point than the glued sandwich in most phones at this price.

Three screws is not the whole story

A low screw count is a good sign, not a guarantee. Adhesive is still present, and adhesive is the part of a phone that decides whether a repair takes twenty minutes or two hours — heat, picks, a solvent, and a real chance of breaking something on the way in.

The battery also sits close to the mid-frame in a way that rewards patience. This is a device a careful owner can service, but it is not a device that forgives a rushed one.

Six years of patches, three of features

The update promise is two numbers, and only one of them is generous. Six years of security maintenance is a long life for the hardware. Three platform upgrades is a short one for the software, and the gap matters: security patches keep a phone safe, platform upgrades keep it capable.

That is still a reasonable commitment at this price, and it is better than several companies with larger marketing budgets. But if the plan is to keep the phone for six years, expect the final years to feel like maintenance rather than progress. The seven-year commitment from Google sets the standard this device is measured against, and it does not match it.

Who it is for

Buy this if you want a phone that does not look like everyone else's, you keep devices for years rather than months, and you would rather have a repairable mid-ranger than a sealed flagship at twice the price.

Skip it if you want the longest software promise on the market, or if you want a parts catalogue with the depth of a company that has been doing this for a decade. The design is distinctive; the service network is still young.

Keep

  • The rear panel is a small number of screws away, and the battery that follows it is not buried under the board
  • A transparent back means you can see what you are about to touch, which is a genuine repair advantage
  • Six years of security updates on a 329 euro device is better than most of the price bracket
  • Independent EU rating places it mid-table, ahead of several far more expensive flagships

Costs you

  • Adhesive still appears where clips would have been enough, and it has to be defeated with heat
  • Three platform upgrades is a short feature life even with patches running longer
  • Plastic frame and modest water resistance make it a device you want to open carefully
  • The parts channel is thinner than Google's or Fairphone's — check availability in your region before you buy
